This semester, I aim to expand my vocabulary and grammar and improve my listening and speaking skills. Most importantly, I would like to gain more confidence in using Mandarin in real-life situations outside of class. I am also considering an exchange in China which would certainly help me improve my language skills as well as develop cultural understanding.
A few months ago, I went to get a haircut from a Chinese hairdresser. While getting the haircut, I brought up that I have been learning Chinese for two years. We switched from English to Mandarin and try to have some basic conversation – it went quite well except for some words that I did not understand. Suddenly, a local customer came to the salon, sat down, and waited while my haircut was getting finished. He heard me speaking Mandarin with the lady and said: “I am so impressed that you speak Chinese fluently.” Given that my level is very far from fluent, it made me laugh, but at the same time added confidence to be using the language in the real world more often.
The most challenging aspect of learning Chinese so far has been a large number of characters. While I am relatively good at picking up and learning new characters, it is easy for me to forget them once I am not using them, which makes reading Chinese texts more difficult for me. I think that the best way to overcome this issue is to regularly review my “vocabulary package” to make sure that I remember the characters I learned in the past and can use them daily. Given that simply going through vocabulary lists in previous textbooks might be a bit boring, I am planning to do short journal entries related to the topics we covered in my previous Chinese classes to be actively engaged with the relevant vocabulary and also make it relevant for my daily life.
