这个学期我觉得我的中文水平提高了很多。现在我说的话比九月更流利。Reflecting on my first learning journal, my main goal was to get better at speaking conversationally and getting more confidence in speaking. I think this class helped so, so much with that. Getting so many chances to practice speaking with others in Chinese was great. I feel I am way more able to communicate myself in Mandarin. If I went to China, I think I could probably get by alright! I feel less afraid of making mistakes because while it’s important to learn the correct things, I have also learned that communication is still possible even with them—and they really are a great way to learn what you’re doing wrong. While I wasn’t specifically aiming to work on them, I think my reading has gotten a lot better, I’m able to read much faster and recognize more characters, and my penmanship has also improved. I might even say I actually like writing Chinese characters! Sure it takes a bit to learn the strokes, but once you do, it flows really nicely!
I think the most meaningful experiences in this class were
the times I got to have more freeform conversations with classmates and OP
partners. It was so fun to feel like I could actually have a normal interaction
in Mandarin and talk about everyday life and even add in some humour at times. 谢谢同学们，谢谢老师！我很享受跟你们聊天！
I’m still deciding if I’m going to take CHIN 333, but either
way, I am definitely going to continue to practice Mandarin with my friend/tutor
over the next term. I think my next goal is to try and keep up with what I have
learned this past fall. I know I’ll lose some of it without classes happening,
but I want to try to keep my level somewhat steady. Maybe I’ll start watching
more shows in Mandarin to help with that!
