Learning Journal 2: 我在中文课的成长

This term, I feel that I have learned a lot in terms of expanding my grammar and vocabulary. Learning new grammatical ways to express the same thoughts has helped me to improve my fluency and the speed in which I can articulate my thoughts in Mandarin.

Though the Personalized Learning assignments and the final projects were very difficult, I felt that it was useful to challenge myself to memorize Chinese. I had never really tried to do this before and it forced me to think more on the correct translations in order to recall it more easily. I definitely felt the difference in difficulty levels between this course and the 200 level Chinese courses, as even the number of new vocabulary in each new lesson was significantly greater than before.

An experience I felt was somewhat amusing for me was my Personalized Learning 2 assignment. This is because I decided to wear a Christmas gingerbread onesie with the hood on whilst filming the video. Another fun experience happened during the Mandarin Singing Contest. It was incredibly fun to go back on stage to sing 一剪梅 with the other group who also sang the song, I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time. I also had fun watching all the other groups perform, all of them were really creative in their own way.

One of my next goals for Mandarin learning is to take one more Mandarin course next term: CHIN 333. In terms of my other goals, I want to continue improving my fluency and the speed in which I can translate from English to Mandarin and vice versa.

In terms of my non-Chinese related goals, I plan to major in Computer Science and try getting into the Co-op program to gain some more valuable work experience. I might also try to minor in something like Data Science.
