Coming into this class was really scary for me. I hadn’t spoken Chinese in almost 1.5 years and I felt like I was going to find CHIN 331 way too difficult for me. Through this semester, I feel like I have been able to become more confident about my Chinese abilities and it also helped me remember a lot of the vocabulary and grammar that I had learned previously in high school. I think my speaking and listening skills have definitely improved and I felt more confident in my reading and writing abilities whether we were reading characters off of the in-class learning notes or doing reading and writing workbook assignments. Having OP sessions and the class being held so interactively was definitely a good way to get out of my comfort zone and practice speaking out loud to other Mandarin speakers or those learning Mandarin, like me. I feel much more confident overall about the content we learned and speaking Mandarin more in general. The content was definitely well taught and I felt motivated to want to learn and cover the material, even if that meant that there were a lot of assignments or reviewing tasks that I needed to do in order to do so. I also really enjoyed how practical the topics we learned were. Between school culture, where we live, food, shopping and choosing classes, it’s all very relevant to me as a student and so I appreciated that we covered things I would actually be able to use in a conversation. I also really enjoyed having such a small class where everyone was super friendly and willing to participate and learn. I think languages are scary to learn, especially when everyone is at different levels and places with their Chinese learning and so I’m really appreciative of 李老师 and my other classmates who made the classroom feel safe and comfortable learning and practicing new sentences or words without feeling judged. My goal is hopefully to continue learning and taking Chinese classes at UBC. I wasn’t sure if learning languages in university was going to be really difficult since many people say it’s too hard, but I’m hoping that I’ll have space with my elective credits to continue studying Chinese in the coming years. My new Chinese learning goal is to feel comfortable speaking with more native speakers and be more confident in my Chinese and my ability to hold my own in a Mandarin conversation.
